The Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association (HPNA) is a not-for-profit professional association formed for the promotion and welfare of nurses involved or interested in hospice and palliative care. Life members are entitled to attend the HPNA General Body Meeting, usually held along with the annual conference. Members also receive HPNA e-bulletins and all relevant communications. Please keep your contact information updated so you do not miss important announcements, events, and professional activities.

After successful approval, each life member is issued a unique HPNA Life Membership Number. Members should quote this number in all future correspondence with HPNA.

What is Hospice Care?

Compassionate, specialized care for individuals facing a life-limiting illness — focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Where Does the Word “Hospice” Come From?

The word “Hospice” comes from the Latin word hospitium, meaning hospitality or a place of shelter.

In medieval times, a hospice was a place of rest and refuge for weary travelers, pilgrims, and the sick.

Today: It is still a refuge — not just a physical place, but a specialized concept of care for people on their final journey.
